The Beato Nuno House has its origin connected to the history of the Fatima’s Appearances.

Sister Lucia narrates that on October 13, 1917 our Virgin Mother appeared at a certain time in the form of the Lady of Carmel. She had something hanging in her hands (a scapular) and she resembled the image that is worshipped in Fatima's parish.

On June 12, 1950, the Rev. P. General of the Carmelite Order, P. Kiliano Lynch, met in the Carmelo of Coimbra with Sister Lucia. In that encounter she asked if something could be built in Fatima to revive, in the soul of the Portuguese people, the old devotion to Our Lady of Carmel.

General P. took the burden on his shoulders seriously and began to work. He thought this new foundation should be the centre of the Carmelite devotion to the Sacred Mary. On March 13, of 1955 General P. presided in Fatima at the setting of the first stone in which was inscribed: " Mater Decor Carmeli, grati filii hanc domum B. Nonii tibi dedicant. 13 Martü 1955." He was soon known as the great national hero, "The Santo Condestável", and the dedicated Carmelite Fr. Nuno of Saint Mary.

On August 14, 1957 the building was inaugurated with a vast ceremonial program. A convention of The International Congress of the Third Order was held Presided by the Eminent Discalced, Cardinal Carmelite Adeodato Piazza. Also participating was the Rev. General P., Kiliano Lynch, as well as persons from the whole Order, Mr. Apostolic Nuncio, the Auxiliary Bishop of Leiria, some Carmelite Bishops and many Carmelites and numerous Third Order Confreres from all over the world.

From the beginning the building was designed to welcome people and institutions that wanted to go on retreat. Other encounters of different natures were also being held in these facilities that were prepared to welcome on its five floors some 160 people. Besides rooms there is a Chapel, a reunion/party room, several living rooms, a wide dining room and other dependencies necessary for good reception. With the passage of time and appearance of other necessities and better conditions the house was remodelled. It now accommodates 135 rooms and has better infrastructures, which allows it to welcome around 250 people.
